No stranger to family and church as the foundational stuff of life, George Candee made a lifelong career as a minister. Throughout the 1800's he traveled around America speaking out about abolition, reform, social equality, faith, and religion. His activism in the realm of Christianity eventually led him to try and bring his principles to the political arena of America.

George Candee grew up amongst the thirteen children of Asa and Mary (nee McAlpine)
Candee.  In fact, he was born one of triplets in Volney, New York, in
the early spring of 1831.

Maybe you got to this webpage from our Oswego spot where we had Asa and Mary's family assembled on the page.  Or maybe you found us in a search engine.  Either way, welcome!

In here we're looking more closely at Reverend Candee's life.

Our job in sketching out Reverend Candee's biography is to tell his family tree story AND his career story.

It's no small undertaking.  And we're tinkering laboriously.

Glimpses of George show us a fireball of energy.  In hindsight his was one of the most active lives of any of our relatives.  And we want to find the right blend of writing style that lets the Reverend speak for himself.  In other words, we don't want to interpret George's preachings.  So we'll want to assemble as much of his paperwork and narratives about him as possible in this blogspace.

We've had the good fortune of connecting with a living relative, Charles Antrobus.  So we'll include here a record of that correspondence in addition to some of the highlights.

And we want to tell family tree stories about all the other people in the Reverend's life too.  So we'll do our best to format all this blogging in the best possible way.

We sure hope to connect with other people who are interested in the Reverend, his family, and the broad spectrum of topics and history which we can glean from studying all things George Candee.

Some clarification...

The Reverend George Candee was the brother of our direct ancestor in the batch of siblings created by Asa and Mary (McAlpine) Cande/ee/y.  It was actually their eldest child, Caius Marius Candee who married Eliza HITCHCOCK and had George H. Candy who married Nellie Lake.  That George and Nellie had several children...one of whom was Grandpa Ted.  Grandpa Ted married Laura Robinson and they had a Nellie and a Grover.  Grover Erwin Candy, that was Grandpa Grover.  Mama Sherry's father, Grandpa Grover.  Grover married Betty June Wilson/McVicker.  And they had two children.  Johnny and Sherry Lynn.  Sherry, as you know, married Edward Lane and had six children.  That'd be us.

So while we want to preserve the whole family's memories and the whole family tree for the sake of posterity and Mama's Quilt and we are hanging out here with Reverend George, we need to travel back in time to Monroe, Michigan to visit with our direct line ancestors...

Caius and Eliza (Hitchcock) Candee
